The cost level at which the CHF 300 deductible pays off

The question is not "300 or 2500" but "above what level of costs". This calculator gives the threshold for YOUR commune and YOUR age — not a Swiss average.

For example 8001 or Zurich.
What you paid for care last year, all in. Leave empty if you do not know.

What the high deductible saves you

CHF 1'540

per year in premium, before any treatment

The break-even point

CHF 2'011

of health costs in the year

Below this amount the high deductible costs you less over the year. Above it, the low deductible takes the lead again.

What the calculation actually compares

  • Annual premium + deductible + the 10 % co-payment (capped at CHF 700 a year for an adult).

That is the whole year’s spend, not just the premium. Comparing two premiums without counting the deductible always favours the higher deductible — including when it costs more.

  • The threshold depends on the commune: two communes in the same canton can have different premiums.

There is no "Swiss" threshold. Gaps between regions of one canton exceed CHF 1,000 a year on the premium alone.

  • A change of deductible must be notified before 30 November.

Same deadline as changing insurer. The FOPH advises writing before 15 November.

The calculation uses the official FOPH premiums for the current year, with no margin and no comfortable rounding.

How to read the result

  1. 1Enter your commune and year of birth: the premiums actually available to you are loaded.
  2. 2The threshold shown is the level of annual costs above which the low deductible becomes cheaper.
  3. 3Below it, the high deductible costs you less. Above it, the reverse — and the gap widens fast.
