Travel insurance
Cancellation, assistance and luggage are three separate products. Many people pay twice for cover a credit card already gave them.
Cancellation
It refunds costs if you cannot travel: illness, accident, death of a relative, sometimes job loss. It is taken out before the trip, often within days of booking — buying it the night before departure is pointless.
Assistance and repatriation
This is the cover that really matters. Basic health insurance covers emergency treatment abroad at no more than twice what it would cost in Switzerland — nowhere near enough in the United States. Medical repatriation is not covered by basic insurance at all.
What you may already have
- Your credit card often covers cancellation, provided you paid for the trip with it.
- Your supplementary health policy frequently includes assistance abroad.
- A motoring club membership covers repatriation of the vehicle and sometimes of people.
- Check before buying: three contracts covering the same thing do not pay out three times.
What drives the price
- Annual contract or single trip.
- The number of people covered.
- The geographic zone.
- The cancellation ceiling.
- Your age, for the medical covers.
We show no tariffs on this page. Unlike LAMal premiums, no public register publishes prices for this branch: they depend on your profile and are calculated case by case. Quoting a figure here would be an invention.
