The gap inside a single canton
Eleven cantons split their territory into several premium regions. Two households under the same canton, the same insurers and the same system pay different amounts depending on their municipality. Here is what the wrong side of the border costs.
| Canton | Regions | Cheapest region | Most expensive region | Annual gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zurich | 3 | CHF 488.50 | CHF 605.20 | CHF 1'400.40 |
| Bern | 3 | CHF 520.40 | CHF 631.00 | CHF 1'327.20 |
| Valais | 2 | CHF 470.90 | CHF 544.40 | CHF 882.00 |
| Grisons | 3 | CHF 426.00 | CHF 499.00 | CHF 876.00 |
| St. Gallen | 3 | CHF 467.00 | CHF 536.40 | CHF 832.80 |
| Basel-Landschaft | 2 | CHF 575.30 | CHF 630.00 | CHF 656.40 |
| Fribourg | 2 | CHF 523.30 | CHF 577.00 | CHF 644.40 |
| Ticino | 2 | CHF 626.70 | CHF 679.00 | CHF 627.60 |
| Lucerne | 3 | CHF 452.80 | CHF 502.55 | CHF 597.00 |
| Schaffhausen | 2 | CHF 504.40 | CHF 552.00 | CHF 571.20 |
| Vaud | 2 | CHF 601.70 | CHF 647.80 | CHF 553.20 |
The gap is computed on the lowest premium available in each region: it measures the floor, not the average. In practice a household often pays more.
The rise by canton, 2022 → 2026
Change in the lowest premium, averaged over the regions of each canton. The ranking shows how unevenly the rise falls across cantons — rarely reported, since only the national figure is quoted.

Method
- Source: official FOPH files published on opendata.swiss, reproduced unchanged.
- A premium belongs to the (canton, premium region) pair, not to a municipality: aggregates are computed per region.
- The FOPH codes ZE and ZR, which denote insured people living abroad, are excluded: they are not cantons.
- No value is estimated, extrapolated or filled in.
