Personal liability insurance

It is compulsory nowhere, and yet almost nobody should go without it: it pays for the damage you cause other people.

What it pays

Any damage you, your household or your children cause a third party: the vase knocked over at a friend’s, the bike that scratches a car, the forgotten tap that floods the flat below, the dog that bites.

It also pays to defend you against unjustified claims — a service most people discover the day they need it.

Why the amounts are so high

Water damage in an older building quickly reaches six figures. An accident causing lasting disability to a third party runs into hundreds of thousands, because compensation covers lifelong loss of earnings. CHF 5 million of cover is not excess: it is the market standard, for a few francs more than a cut-price policy.

What it excludes

  • Your own belongings: that is household insurance.
  • Damage caused with a motor vehicle: that is motor liability.
  • Deliberate damage.
  • Damage arising from professional activity: that needs professional liability cover.

What drives the price

  • Household composition: alone, as a couple, with children.
  • The cover chosen, often CHF 5 or 10 million.
  • The deductible.
  • Extensions: keeping animals, sports, letting property.

We show no tariffs on this page. Unlike LAMal premiums, no public register publishes prices for this branch: they depend on your profile and are calculated case by case. Quoting a figure here would be an invention.
