Legal protection insurance

It pays the lawyer, the court costs and the expert reports. Its one absolute rule: it must exist before the dispute, never after.

What it takes on

  • Lawyers’ fees, in Switzerland and often across Europe.
  • Court and expert costs.
  • The other side’s costs if you lose.
  • A legal advice line, usable without opening a case.

The waiting period

Most contracts set a waiting period — often three months — before cover applies in certain areas, notably employment and tenancy law. That is what stops people taking out cover the day after a dismissal.

A dispute that has already arisen, or one you could reasonably foresee, is never covered. It is the hardest rule in this branch and the most frequent cause of refusal.

Private or traffic?

Traffic legal protection covers disputes involving a vehicle: accidents, licence withdrawal, buying a car. Private legal protection covers the rest: tenancy, work, consumer matters, insurance, neighbours. They are sold separately or together, and many people hold one without knowing which.

What drives the price

  • The areas covered: private, traffic, employment, tenancy.
  • Household composition.
  • The ceiling per case.
  • Geographic coverage.

We show no tariffs on this page. Unlike LAMal premiums, no public register publishes prices for this branch: they depend on your profile and are calculated case by case. Quoting a figure here would be an invention.
