2027 health insurance premiums: what is known, and when

The 2027 premiums are not published yet. Here is what the FOPH has officially written, when the figures land, and what your canton has paid so far.

The 2027 premiums are not published yet

The FOPH announces them at a press conference. The exchange with the cantons that precedes it is set for 21 September 2026 or 25 September 2026 — the Office itself writes that the final date would only be fixed in August. This page will show the real figures the same day, at the same address.

What the FOPH officially wrote

On 2 June 2026 the Federal Office of Public Health wrote to the cantonal health departments. The letter is public. Three passages say something useful:

  • « the 2026 combined ratio, which serves as the starting point for the 2027 premiums, stands at almost 101 % »

In other words: in 2026 insurers spend roughly what they take in.

  • « for the 2027 premiums in Switzerland there is a slight catch-up effect on top of the rise in costs from 2026 to 2027. The premium increase should therefore be slightly above the expected rise in costs »

Insurers expect costs to rise by "a little over 5 %". The FOPH puts no figure on the premium increase — and neither will we.

  • « Differences may nevertheless exist between cantons and insurers »

The Swiss average says nothing about your bill. Your canton and your insurer do.

The reference point: the 2026 premiums

For 2026 the FOPH announced an average monthly premium of CHF 393.30 and a +4.4 % rise across Switzerland. That is the starting point next year's premiums build on.

Two correct figures that do not say the same thing

The FOPH measures the average premium: +4.4 % for 2026. This site measures the cheapest premium in each canton: cantonal median +5.8 %. The gap is not an error — a cheap insurer arriving in a canton lowers the cheapest premium without anyone paying less. Both measures are shown side by side so you know which one you are reading.
