Methodology
Every amount on this site comes from a public file you can download. Here is which one, and what we do with it.
The sources
- LAMal premiums: the “Prämien_CH” file published by the FOPH on opendata.swiss — 217,472 tariffs for the current year.
- Premium regions: the “Prämienregionen” workbook from priminfo.admin.ch, linking every municipality and postcode to its tariff region.
- Insurer register: the list of approved insurers published by the FOPH.
- Catchment areas: the “Einzugsgebiete” file, stating which insurer offers which model, and where.
- Pillar 3a caps: Federal Tax Administration, tax year 2026.
How a premium is tied to your municipality
An official premium is not attached to a municipality but to a canton + premium region pair. We use the regions workbook to make the join. That is why two neighbouring municipalities can show different prices: they are not in the same tariff region.
Some models are restricted to a specific list of municipalities. We filter them out: showing an offer unavailable where you live would send you to ask for a contract you would be refused at the counter.
The headline figures
When a page says “from CHF … per month”, the profile is always the same: adult, CHF 300 deductible, accident cover included. A headline figure has to be comparable from page to page, or it means nothing.
The yearly gap shown on the homepage is the median, across Switzerland’s 42 tariff zones, of the difference between the cheapest insurer and the market average. We also publish the gap to the most expensive insurer — more striking, but less representative.
What we do not compute
We do not estimate your real pillar 3a tax saving: it depends on your marginal rate, hence on your canton, municipality, income and marital status. We show a range and say what it rests on.
We do not rank pillar 3a products. No official register publishes their returns, guarantees and fees — building a ranking from nothing would be an invention.
Updates
The FOPH announces the following year’s premiums in late September. Our database is rebuilt from the official files and redeployed on publication day. The year shown on each page always states which financial year the amounts belong to.
