Hospital cover, from general to private

Medical quality is the same in all three wards — the law requires it. What changes is who operates on you, where, and which room you wake up in.

What basic insurance already covers

Basic insurance covers the general ward of a hospital on your canton’s list, with a daily flat contribution payable by you. In an emergency or on medical grounds, an out-of-canton facility is covered too.

The rest — a one- or two-bed room, choice of surgeon, free access to private clinics — is the domain of supplementary cover. That is real comfort, but it is comfort, and selling it as access to better medicine is misleading.

Why age decides everything

These supplementary policies fall under the VVG: the insurer may ask health questions, exclude a condition, or refuse. Signing at thirty in good health and at fifty-five after a first problem are not the same act, and the second often fails.

Cancelling private hospital cover to save money is therefore close to irreversible past a certain age. Before doing it, ask what taking it back would cost — the answer usually settles the question.

What drives the price

  • Age at signing, decisive because health questions are permitted.
  • The level chosen: general, semi-private, private, or flexible.
  • Geographic scope: canton of residence, all of Switzerland, or abroad.
  • Any hospital deductible written into the contract.

We show no tariffs on this page. Unlike LAMal premiums, no public register publishes prices for this branch: they depend on your profile and are calculated case by case. Quoting a figure here would be an invention.
