A copy of a medicine whose patent has expired, with identical active substance and a lower price.

What it changes for you

Refusing the generic when one exists costs double: the co-payment rises from 10 to 20 % on the difference. On a chronic treatment this means hundreds of francs a year. The pharmacist may substitute unless the doctor states otherwise — it is a question for the prescription, not for the till.
