The 270 postcodes where your postcode is not enough
The postal service and the Federal Office of Public Health do not divide Switzerland the same way. The result: 270 postcodes out of 3178 — 8.5 % — fall into several premium regions. For those, knowing your postcode is not enough to know your premium.
Two divisions that do not line up
The Swiss basic premium depends on the canton and premium region pair: 42 regions for the whole country. The postcode follows the logic of mail sorting, which has no reason to match municipal or cantonal boundaries.
Some numbers even cross a cantonal border: 1290 is split between Geneva and Vaud, 1485 between Fribourg and Vaud. Your municipality of residence decides, never your postal address.
What it costs in practice
In the ten numbers below, the annual gap between the two regions sharing a postcode runs from several hundred francs to more than a thousand. Two neighbours on the same postal street can therefore pay premiums a month’s rent apart.
Each postcode’s page shows the regions it covers, the municipalities concerned and the price of each. That is the only way to settle the ambiguity without landing on the wrong rate.
