Where premiums have risen most since 2015

Between 2015 and 2026, the lowest premium rose by 93.7 % in canton Ticino and by 25.1 % in canton Zug. A factor of 3.7 between the two extremes, for an insurance whose law is the same everywhere.

The median hides what matters

Across the 26 cantons, the median rise reaches 63.7 % since 2015. That is the figure usually quoted, and it describes nobody: half the cantons are above it, and first to last spans a factor of 3.7.

We measure each canton’s lowest premium, not its average. That is the figure someone can actually obtain by comparing, and the only one that stays comparable year on year as the number of insurers changes.

Why one canton runs away and its neighbour does not

Premiums must cover the health costs observed in the region. A canton whose hospital use rises, whose population ages faster, or whose density of doctors grows, sees its premiums follow — even if its residents changed nothing.

That is also why moving from one canton to another can weigh more on a budget than switching insurer. The two compound: your region’s page gives both figures.
