What not comparing costs
Across Switzerland’s 42 premium regions, the median gap between the cheapest insurer and the market average is CHF 582.88 a year. Against the dearest insurer in the same region it reaches CHF 1'566.30.
For strictly identical cover
The catalogue of basic insurance is set by law: the same medicine, the same operation, the same hospital stay are reimbursed identically at all 34 insurers. The gap therefore buys nothing extra — neither better care nor a shorter medical wait.
What really differs is service: reimbursement speed, quality of contact, the app. Real criteria — but they do not justify CHF 582.88 a year on a compulsory expense.
The region where inertia costs most
The record goes to region 2 of canton Ticino: CHF 796.34 away from the average, and CHF 1'940.40 from the dearest insurer in the same region.
These amounts are annual and repeat every year nothing is done. Over five years the median gap already exceeds CHF 2'914.40 — for a step that amounts to one registered letter before 30 November.
