The 25 insurers that have disappeared since 2015

In 2015, 59 insurers offered basic cover in Switzerland. Today there are 34. The market consolidated without anyone telling the story, because the FOPH keeps only the current year’s register online.

One insurer in two has gone

The movement is steady: two to five disappearances a year, without a jolt and without an announcement. Intras and Sanagate go in 2021, Arcosana in 2022, Supra in 2024, vivacare in 2025. None makes headlines, and each takes with it a book of policyholders who find themselves, overnight, somewhere else.

These names are no longer available anywhere: the official register of authorised insurers is replaced each year and past vintages can no longer be downloaded. We rebuilt them from the rate archives themselves, where each insurer’s FOPH number sits next to its name.

What consolidation changes for you

Fewer insurers means less choice in your region. None offers its rates everywhere: depending on the area, twenty to thirty insurers are actually available, and that number falls with the national total.

A merger does not change your cover — the catalogue of basic insurance is set by law. It does change your premium, your contact and sometimes your model: that is the moment to compare, not to let things happen.
