Can a Swiss health insurer refuse you?

The answer

No. For basic insurance, all 34 Swiss insurers must accept anyone resident in their operating area, whatever their age or health.

Why

This is the duty to admit written into the health insurance act. No health questionnaire, no exclusion, no refusal: an insurer asking for a medical examination for basic cover is outside the law.

Supplementary policies fall under private law. They may ask health questions, refuse, or accept with exclusions. That is why you should never cancel a supplementary policy before the new one is confirmed in writing.
