Can a supplementary policy be cancelled together with basic insurance?

The answer

No. They are two contracts of different natures: basic cover ends on 31 December if the letter arrives by 30 November; a supplementary policy follows the deadlines of ITS own contract, often three months before the annual expiry.

Why

This is November’s most common mistake: people cancel everything, switch insurer for basic cover, and discover in January that the supplementary policy is still running with the old insurer.

Never cancel a supplementary policy before you hold the new insurer’s WRITTEN confirmation. The duty to accept applies to basic cover only: in the supplementary field a refusal is lawful, and a known condition can be excluded.
