Why do premiums rise every year?

The answer

Because they must cover the coming year’s health costs. Since 2015, Switzerland’s lowest premium has risen by 179.3 %.

Why

Insurers may not make a profit on basic insurance. Their premiums are approved each year by the FOPH and must match expected costs: ageing, new treatments, rising volume of care.

The movement also shows in the number of players: 59 insurers operated in 2015, 34 remain. 25 have merged or closed — their names are on our archive pages.
