How many health insurers are there in Switzerland?
The answer
34 insurers are authorised to offer basic insurance. There were 59 in 2015: 25 have disappeared in 11 years.
Why
None offers its rates everywhere: how many insurers are actually available depends on your region, and ranges from about twenty to thirty depending on the area.
The consolidation is continuous and quiet. Intras, Sanagate, Arcosana, Supra, Wincare, avanex and 19 others have merged or closed since 2015. The FOPH keeps only the current year’s register online: our archive pages name the rest.
