Do I have to insure a newborn, and when?

The answer

Yes, from birth — and better still before it: registration is compulsory within three months, and cover then applies retroactively from day one. The lowest child premium is CHF 20.50 a month.

Why

Registering during pregnancy has a concrete benefit: for supplementary policies, the insurer cannot impose exclusions on an unborn child. After birth it can, if a health problem is found.

The child may be with a different insurer from the parents, and comparing is worth it: the ranking of insurers for children is not the same as for adults in the same region.

Your own figure

The comparator works out your actual premium from your age, deductible and municipality, across all 34 insurers at once.
